Children’s Day (also called International Children’s Day) is in many countries a children’s holiday that is celebrated on different dates. In many countries, it is celebrated on November 20, the day the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of the Child was adopted. In the former USSR and in the countries that were its satellite states, the date is June 1, the first day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Some other countries adopt other data. Children’s Day began on the second Sunday in June, 1857, thanks to the Rev. Dr. Charles Leonard, pastor of the Universalist Church of the Redeemer in Chelsea, Massachusetts: Leonard organized a special service dedicated to children. Leonard called this day Rose Day, although it was later called Flower Sunday and then Children’s Day. Children’s Day was first mentioned in Geneva at the World Conference on the Protection and Welfare of Children in August 1925, at which 54 representatives from different countries adopted the Declaration on the Protection of Children. After this conference, many governments introduced “Children’s Day”. In Turkey, Children’s Day was first celebrated on April 23, 1920.

In 1954, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) issued a recommendation that each state should have a day on the so-called “Universal Children’s Day”.
